TREKKING

Stunning self or guided mountain treks

Take advantage of an exceptional opportunity to explore Central Java and experience her legendary beauty. Sitinggil allows you, your family and friends to experience some really fabulous walks. Leaving from behind the house, walk through rice fields, in forests, up valleys, across mountains, through villages where time stood still, across streams, past waterfalls….you get the idea.

DAY HIKES

Hundreds of village trails are hidden behind Sitinggil, not far from the base of famous Mount Telomoyo.
2 – 6hrs duration, from beginner to serious standard, these treks are open to almost any age or level of fitness. Pass through rice paddy terraces, along the side of spring water streams, little villages, and herb and coffee plantations. We like to call it the land that time forgot; in the best possible sense.

Practical details include:

* All bookings require a minimum of 4pax

* Start as close to 6am as possible, to enjoy the best part of the day

* Wear sunscreen, all-weather walking shoes (it can get muddy and wet), modest exercise gear and a hat

* Bring your own water bottle

* Note that walk times may vary according to how fast you want to take it!

2hrs – Get into nature on this gentle, 4km wander through the fields. See the local agricultural activities (with very little modern development) and spring water irrigation streams from high in the mountains above.
Child-friendly.
Enjoy coffee or tea and local cakes (jajan desa) on your return back to Sitinggil.

3.5hrs – As above, plus cross the fresh spring water stream in the valley, pass hidden villages, and visit a spray-free coffee plantation in the forest.
Enjoy coffee or tea, brunch and fresh fruit juice on your return.

6hrs – See all of the above and more as you hike all the way to Kalipancur waterfall and take a dip OR up to the top of Gunung Gajah (Elephant Hill) for spectacular district and lake views.
Enjoy coffee or tea, a fruit picnic during the walk, and lunch with fresh juice on your return.

3D/2N WEEKENDERS

Ready to spend a few days with nature? Here are three interesting Sitinggil weekend adventure suggestions:

GETTING TO KNOW YOU – relaxed option

Friday

Arrive at Sitinggil in time for sunset drinks round the campfire, at the foot of some legendary Central Javanese mountains. Watch the stars as you enjoy some of the most traditional cuisine of the area, produced from scratch, and from very local ingredients; even our rice is farmed in the immediate district.

For your two nights with us, either bring your tents and set up camp next to the fire for the night (50K/pax/night), hire full camping equipment (250K/2pax/night), or stay in Mahayana Forest Sleep, just 5 minutes’ walk out the back of the property.

Saturday

Morning – Enjoy coffee as the sun rises, and set off for a 4 hour trek. Cross rice terraces, navigate the forested valley, and pass tiny villages. Return in time for brunch, relax, or cool down in the all-natural, public swimming pool across the road that is fed by a local spring water aquifer.

Afternoon - After a snack of ‘village cakes’ (jajan desa) and your choice of locally-grown herbal tea, head down to serene Rawa Pening lake for a ride on a simple motorboat. Carry on to either Candi Dukuh (a rarely visited, and not yet reconstructed 9th century Hindu temple on top of a nearby hill) or to the restored colonial-Dutch railway station and museum in Ambarawa.

Evening – A special BBQ chicken dinner, cooked in our outdoor wood-fired oven will be ready for you in our historic Javanese wooden home. Book an optional Central Javanese-style jazz (‘keroncong’) 3-piece band for extra ambience.

Sunday

Morning – Sleep in; the bike ride through villages in the area sets off at 7am. Return to Sitinggil in time for brunch, then choose from either a tailored organic gardening workshop, an introduction to the basics of permaculture (and visit our center), or learn the A to Z of prize koi fish breeding.

Finish off the great weekend with a leisurely grilled fish lunch.
